तितलियाँ केवल अपने रंगीन पंखों के लिए ही नहीं, बल्कि अपनी अनोखी आदतों के लिए भी जानी जाती हैं। इंसानों की तरह उनके पास जीभ पर स्वाद कलिकाएँ नहीं होतीं। वे अपने भोजन का स्वाद अपने पैरों से पहचानती हैं। उनके पैरों में छोटे संवेदनशील अंग होते हैं, जो किसी पत्ते या फूल पर बैठते ही यह समझ लेते हैं कि वहाँ रस है या नहीं।
तितलियों का मुख एक लंबी नली जैसा होता है, जिसे सूंड कहा जाता है। इसकी मदद से वे फूलों का रस पीती हैं। जब वे फूलों पर बैठती हैं, तो अनजाने में परागकण एक फूल से दूसरे फूल तक पहुँच जाते हैं, जिससे परागण की प्रक्रिया में मदद मिलती है।
कई तितलियाँ मिट्टी, पानी के छोटे गड्ढों या पसीने की ओर भी आकर्षित होती हैं। ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि उन्हें वहाँ से नमक और खनिज मिलते हैं, जो उनके शरीर के लिए जरूरी होते हैं। विशेष रूप से नर तितलियाँ इन खनिजों को संभालकर रखती हैं और प्रजनन के दौरान मादा तितलियों को भी प्रदान करती हैं।
इस तरह तितलियाँ केवल प्रकृति की सुंदरता नहीं बढ़ातीं, बल्कि परागण और पर्यावरण के संतुलन में भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती हैं।
