कपिलवस्तु (कपिला का स्थान) उस शहर का नाम है, जहां सिद्धार्थ
गौतम (बुद्ध 563-483 ईसा पूर्व) बडे हुए और आध्यात्मिक मार्ग को अपनाने के लिए इस स्थान
को छोडने से पूर्व अपने जीवन के प्रारंभिक 29 वर्ष व्यतीत किये। आध्यात्मिक मार्ग
के कारण ही उनका प्रबोधन हुआ था। माना जाता है कि कपिलवस्तु शहर का नाम भारतीय
दर्शन के सांख्य विद्यालय के संस्थापक ऋषि कपिला के सम्मान में रखा गया था। कुछ
विद्वानों का यह मानना है कि इन्होंने बुद्ध के आध्यात्मिक और बौद्धिक विकास को
प्रभावित किया था। वर्तमान समय में, कपिलवस्तु
नेपाल के एक जिले को संदर्भित करता है जहाँ तिलौराकोट (Tilaurakot) का
पुरातात्विक स्थल स्थित है। यह स्थान प्राचीन कपिलवस्तु के दावेदारों में से एक है।
लेकिन यह भी माना जाता है कि यह स्थान नेपाल की सीमा के पार अर्थात भारत के उत्तर
प्रदेश के गाँव और पुरातात्विक स्थल पिपरहवा को संदर्भित करता है, जो प्राचीन कपिलवस्तु शहर के रूप में अन्य प्रमुख दावेदार है। दोनों ही
स्थलों ने अपने दावों और मान्यताओं के लिए महत्वपूर्ण सबूत प्रदान किए हैं,
