India : Rural - 592,765 Villages

India had 640,932 villages in 2011 (Census) and this has now increased to 676,260 villages (Min. of Panchayati Raj, March 2026). Of these, 592,765 villages were inhabited as per Census 2011, and 255,146 are Gram Panchayats.

The Multilingualism data (Census 2011) for Rural India was only released as an aggregated State/UT-Rural total for all 121 languages (with more than 10,000 speakers in India). The village-level multilingualism data is not in the public domain, though it can be estimated on the basis of each village's proximity to the 7,933 Statutory/Census towns.

The Language % in the table below shows the percentage of a State/UT's inhabited villages (592,765) which have at least some respective Mother Tongue speakers from the 121 primary Indian languages. Note that the % here is NOT the percentage of the State/UT's total rural population who speak that language.
