India : Rural - 594,204 Villages


India had 640,932 villages in 2011 (Census) and this has now increased to 676,260 villages as per the Ministry of Panchayati Raj's Local Government Directory (LGD), March 2026. Of these, 594,204 villages were Inhabited as per Census 2011, while 41,981 villages were recorded with Zero Population. A further 40,075 villages have been added to the LGD after the Census was conducted and therefore have no corresponding Census 2011 record. Additionally, 3,402 villages that were recorded as Inhabited in Census 2011 are currently absent from the LGD database.
